Animals are eukaryotic and multicellular organisms that form a specific biological kingdom Animalia. Animal taxonomy is the branch of science that deals with the study of finding new animal species, classifying it and finally naming it.

Taxonomy, a Greek word which means arrangement and defining or naming of biological organisms on the basis of their body structure and characteristics. Depending on this, every animal is classified into seven criteria, viz; Kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species.

Now the question arises, why this classification is done and what are its implications. Let’s have a brief look at some of their uses:

  • When we have to search a topic in our book, we do not search the whole book for that specific word. In spite, we just open the index, search the topic there and finally open that page. Same is the use of taxonomy. If we want to enquire anything about any animal kingdom or species, we just look into the animal taxonomy, open that specifically required kingdom or class and gets the information.
  • A taxonomy keeps track of preferred terms, its synonyms, as well as its hierarchical listing of all the animals.
  • Taxonomy provides the basis of genetics among animals as genetic analysis is performed on the basis of systematic.
  • Taxonomy had served the purpose of naming all the animals so that people from different parts of the world or speak different languages can communicate about animals.
  • This system of taxonomy is used to develop the evolutionary relationship, similarities, and differences among different groups of animal’s species.
  • Taxonomy also plays a key role in the morphological, anatomical and cytological comparisons among different animals and species.

This system of nomenclature of animals has removed the confusion among different zoologists. It has also set a platform where knowledge concerning animals can be shared between the zoologists from different areas and different geographies concerning any particular disease or evolution related to animals.
