Syria and Assyria, these two words have always been a point of confusion for everyone. Although Syrian people are believed to be the descendants of the earlier Assyrian people, there are lots of differences between Assyria and Syria.

Syria is a modern nation in West Asia while Assyria was an ancient empire that developed around 3500 BC. The people of ancient Assyria are found in many countries such as Syria, Iraq, and Turkey while the present day Syria is a Muslim dominated country. Assyrians are Semites while Syrians are mostly Arabic.

Originally Assyria and Syria were two different nations although their founders, Asshur and Aram, were brothers, sons of Shem. The religious aspect is quite clear-cut. Assyrians were the first people to adopt Christianity whereas Syrians were mostly Muslims. Culturally, the differences are much less perceptible. If talking about ancient history, Assyrians culture migrated with the conquest of Alexander the Great. The fundamental difference between Assyrian and Syria is that one is a civilization; the other is a relatively modern social construct based on the European concept of a Nation-Stuck.

According to Dr. Joseph’s research “Syria word is derived from the name of King Cyrus who ruled over the area of present-day Syria in 1500 BC”.

It can be said that ‘Syria’ is ‘Assyria’ what the ‘as’ seriously though, the two words are obviously related etymologically but have different meanings. “Assyria” is normally used to describe the ancient Empire, while “Syria” is the name of a modern nation which occupies part of the territory of the ancient Assyrian empire. There is actually a big difference between Assyrians and Syrians. Assyrians existed way before Arabs even existed and Syrians are mostly Arab Muslims while there are Assyrian citizens in Syria. Assyrians have their own language which the Arabs borrowed. Assyrians were one of the first groups to accept Christianity. Assyrians are the indigenous people of Iraq and so on.
