Can octopus breathe if taken out of water?

1 Answer
Nazia

Yes because they do have gills; they keep the water in their mantle cavity which makes up the bulk of the Octopus body. The Octopus draws water in right over its gills and it extracts oxygen right over the water just like the snails in your garden that have gills as well although this animal can actually breathe through their skin as well as long as they stay moist.

Octopus can survive outside the water for about an hour or for a while, depending on how much they come across the contact of watery surfaces, after coming under the contact of any watery surface they try to breathe from their skin and intake oxygen instead of the gills. They can survive out of water for 40 to 60 minutes depending on the atmospheric conditions.

In Moist humid conditions, the chances of the breathing are much more. But in hot and Sunshine whether the chances are much less because the water dries from the land quickly in summer resulting in that the Octopus cannot breathe through their skin. They use a pair of gills along with the blood vessels to breathe.

They use a mantle for that, a mantle in Octopus body is a muscular structure that contains all of its organs in it. Or in other words, we can say the upper covering of its body to protect the organs which include gills, digestive system, hearts, and reproductive glands, which is located on its arms and behind its head.

The Octopus also has a part in his body called funnel which is sometimes called siphon, which is the opening of the body that serves the way for water pumping throughout his gills. The most interesting part of an octopus is that it has 8 brains they only have about 500 million neurons in their brain. The main part of the brain is only the size of a walnut. The giant Octopus mostly spends their lives alone. They are found in the Pacific water from Korea to Alaska and in South to California.

Where does the mighty octopus live?

They live in the coastal waters to the depth of 300 feet or more which is an important place of shelter for these octopuses. They mostly fear from sharks and the large fish. The Octopus hunts their food mostly spaying cloud of dark ink in the water which keeps prevents the Predator from seeing clearly, after then the Octopus attacks his Predator.
