The origin of the zombies dates back to the Haitian tradition. IN this tradition zombie is an animated corpse raised by magical means such as witchcraft.

in Haitian rural folklore, zombies are present as dead people physically revived by the act of necromancy of a bokor, a sorcerer or witch. The bokor is opposed by the houngan or priest and the mambo or priestess of the formal voodoo religion. There is an African legend related to the zombies as well.

A Central or West African origin for the Haitian zombie has been postulated based on two etymologies in the Kongo language, nzambi ("god") and Zumbi ("fetish"). This root helps form the names of several deities, including the Kongo creator deity Nzambi a Mpungu and the Louisiana serpent deity Li Grand Zombi (a local version of the Haitian Damballa), but it is, in fact, a generic word for a divine spirit.  In some African communities, it is believed that a dead person can be zombified by a small child. It is also believed in some areas of South Africa that witches can zombify a person by killing and possessing the victim's body in order to force it into slave labor.

The English word "zombie" was first recorded in 1819, in a history of Brazil by the poet Robert Southey, in the form of "zombie", actually referring to the Afro-Brazilian rebel leader named Zumbi and the etymology of his name in "nzambi”.

A number of films have been made on the concept of zombies in the 1980s,1990s such as hell of the living dead in the year 1981 and so on.

Now the real question that arises is that do zombies really exist? And answering this is quite cumbersome as we will have to consider all aspects while answering this and the answer to this will be supported by scientific facts and not tales of witchcraft and magic.if zombification means making an organism behave without a will of its own then it is possible and we have example to prove the same for eg –a species of fungi called ophiocordyceps unilateral infects certain ants making them climb plants and release spores that can infect new hosts.

But if zombies are defined as reanimated human corpses, then they are much less likely to be real  as they do not have a working respiratory and circulatory system so their body won’t produce ATP and without ATP zombies cannot move because of rigor mortis or even have basic thoughts like hunger.so chances of this are very rare.
