What was the minamata bay tragedy?

Minamata Bay is a place in Japan which is popular for a tragedy occurred due to Minamata disease which was caused due to mercury poisoning. The water of the Minamata Bay was contaminated due to the methylmercury which was thrown into the water by a chemical plant. This water contaminated the fishes and shellfishes.

When humans living locally consumed this, they were also contaminated. Besides humans, animals also get contaminated and died. Till 2001, around 1500 people have died and the company compensated around 10,000 families. Till 2004, the compensation given by the company was $86 billion. The government has also asked the company to clean Minamata Bay.
