What is biodiversity and why does it matter to us?

Biodiversity, also known as Biological diversity is a term which simply describes the variety of living beings on earth. It refers to the variability of number and abundance of multiple different species living in some particular region which includes plants, animals and ecosystems such as coral reefs, forests, rainforests, deserts etc.

It is important for various reasons:

  • To maintain the balance of the ecosystem.
  • To stabilize the social benefit like recreation and tourism, cultural value and education/research.
  • Provision of biological resources.
  • It has importance in human-management as well as in natural ecosystems.
  • They have their own importance in food, human health, industry and culture as well.
