Aquagenic urticaria or water allergy is a rare condition in which you get a hives and rashes when you come in contact with water. This type of water allergy mostly affects the women as compared to men. This condition usually starts around the onset of puberty. It is a form of physical urticaria.

Causes:

The exact cause is not known because of its rarity. There are only 100 cases of aquagenic urticaria from 2011 to date. Thus, there is no treatment of aquagenic urticaria. But if you suffer from water allergy, you can use some common steps to minimize the impact of this disorder. 

The main cause of this order is water because when you come in contact with water, it comes out as a result of intense skin reaction. The temperature of the water can vary from hot to cold. In some cases, tears can also develop a harsh skin reaction.

Symptoms:

Exposure to different kinds of water sources can lead to following symptoms-

  • Burning sensation on the skin
  • Inflammation and reddening of the skin
  • Dryness of the eyes
  • Itching and painful skin 
  • Swelling of the throat
  • Breathing difficulty
  • Hives and red bumps on the skin

Following are some helpful remedies you can try at home easily to reduce the pain of water allergy:

  • Aloe Vera gel has healing properties and works as an anti-inflammatory substance which when applied on wounds gives relieves to the person and helps to reduce the itching in the affected area.
  •  Olive oil also has anti-inflammatory properties and helps to improve the inflamed area of your body and regains your skin’s natural moisture.

Treatment:

Aquagenic urticaria is incurable. However, there are some medical treatment options as follows:

  • A person can take antihistamines. Antihistamines are used to treat allergy-like symptoms.
  • In case of severe allergy, the person can take shots of epinephrine. It increases the blood pressure to reduce swelling and hives.
