The very recent and mysterious infection caused the death of six people in Kerala, is due to the Nipah Virus. Kerala health department is on high alert due to increased death rate by the 'Nipah' virus (NiV).
Nipah virus infection is a disease which can be easily transferred to humans from animals and causes severe diseases and even death to both the species. The virus normally spreads from animals like pigs and bats, which are the hosts for this virus.
The virus, was first identified in 1998 in Malaysia in a pig and then via bats in India, belongs to the member of the family Paramyxoviridae, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), United States. It is a zoonotic virus, which means it spreads to humans from animals by either air or through saliva but not through direct contact.
Symptoms:
- Respiratory problems
- Headache
- Drowsiness
- Disorientation
- Mental confusion
- Coma (Within 48 hours)
- Asymptomatic infection
- Fatal encephalitis
There is no specific treatment available for Nipah Virus. The primary treatment is only the intensive supportive care for humans.
