Internet is the largest network in the world. It is a huge source of updated information of vivid kinds, which can be shared by people globally. Internet came into existence in 1969 in the form of Arpanet when the United States Defence Department Agency built a network for their research work and termed it as Arpanet. 

With the improvement in technology of computers connectivity, the Arpanet was closed in 1990 and thereafter Internet became more popular. The computers connected to the Internet, work on client-server application. The client-server concept supports the exchange of large volumes of data, through different hardware and software at high speed. The Internet provides many services to the users in the form of E-mail, Telnet, FTP (File Transfer Protocol), WWW (World Wide Web) etc.

Reasons of Popularity of Internet:

Internet is the fastest and cost effective means of communication today. For access to information, it is the largest network in the world. A lot of information is available on the internet. Simply sitting at home, we can get a lot of information about several fields such as commercial, industrial, educational, scientific and many more. Since the available information is generally staggered, hence to make the search easier the Archive and Gopher programs are used.

The recent development in presenting the information on Internet is WWW (World Wide Web). One can get information regarding weather forecast, can read online newspaper, get information about software, different products, organizations, etc by using Internet.

Most commercial organizations are using Internet now for providing information about their organization, products, and services. Internet is also popular for watching latest movies, listening the new songs, preparation for several examinations and competitions, creating several jobs, and many more facilities provided by internet.

It is also the most economical way to advertise one’s products by setting a home page and then broadening their scope. Internet is also used to apply jobs in several companies, online interviews, discussions, chatting with several organizations from home without going outside.

Recently, the internet is popular for online payments such as railway reservations, bus reservations, airplane and call for cab from home and also used in digital marketing.
