Arteries are red blood vessels that carry the oxygenated blood from the heart to other parts of the body. Only pulmonary and umbilical arteries carry deoxygenated blood. The arteries have a thick muscular layer to bear the pressure of the blood. Arteries can be hardened if the flow of blood is very hard. This can damage inner artery walls which can further lead to forming of plaque due to fat and calcium. This can lead to narrowing of arteries which can further lead to heart attack.

Veins are blue blood vessels that carry the deoxygenated blood from various parts of the body to the heart with the exception of pulmonary and umbilical veins that carry pure blood. The veins have thin elastic muscular walls with semilunar valves to prevent blood from flowing back. Veins are located near to the skin and damage in veins can swell the portion of the place where they are damaged. Also, the skin of that place can be darkened or become red and cause pain.
