What are the effects of unplanned technological growth?

Daneel

Unplanned technical growth in an area disturbs the delicate equilibrium existing in the ecosystem of that area, and may even lead to disastrous results for the organism of that area. So when starting any project for the development of an area, it is necessary to look into the long-term effects of such a project on the environment.

Example of Dams:

The ill effects of the unplanned technological growth on the ecosystem of an area can be had from the construction of Aswan Dam on the river Nile in Egypt. Aswan Dam was built on the river Nile in Egypt in the year 1967. The purpose of the dam is to accelerate the development of that area. The three main objectives of the dam are to:

  • Prevent annual flooding of the river.
  • Provide water for irrigation in farms and fields
  • Generate electricity for industrialization growth.

What Actually Happened:

Although it was started with a noble intention, but unplanned growth and construction of the dam would disturb the natural ecosystem of that area. The main ill effects of unplanned dam on the environment of that area are as follows:

  • Floods were stopped, but flow of water stopped deposit of nutrients-rich silt on banks of river Nile.
  • The soil became poor in quality and chemical fertilizers were are used to make the soil fertile again.
  • These fertilizer factories consumed almost all the electricity generated by the dam, leaving little for other projects.
  • Canals dug up to carry irrigation water from the dam increased the salt content in the soil due to excessive evaporation.
  • Due to this increased amount of salt in the soil, constant desalinization of the soil was necessary to get a good crop.
  • The dam also caused climatic changes, landslides, greenhouse effect and ozone depletion.
  • Temperatures soared up and the entire ecosystem was disturbed beyond repair. The situation has only worsened from then till now.
