Shammi Kapoor was an Indian film actor and director in Hindi cinema. He was born on 21 October 1931. His parents are Prithviraj Kapoor and Ramsarni Kapoor. He married Geeta Bali. They had a son, Aditya Raj Kapoor, and a daughter Kanchan. After few years Geeta Bali died from smallpox in 1965. Later he married Neila Devi in 1969, from the former royal family of Bhavnagar in Gujarat.
He is one of the prominent lead actor in Bollywood in late 1950s until the early 1970s. He made his Hindi Film debut in 1953 with the film Jeevan Jyoti. He also made a debut in Tamil cinema with the 1992 blockbuster crime drama Amaran. For his performance he received the Filmfare Best Actor Award for Brahmachari in 1968 and for Vidhaata in 1982 as a best supporting role.
In 1950s Shammi acted in serious roles such as Shama Parwana in 1954, comedy flick Mem Sahib in 1956, and thrillers like Chor Bazar in 1954 and a tragic love story Mirza Sahiban in 1957. But the film Tumsa Nahin Dekha opposite Ameeta and Dil Deke Dekho with Asha Parekh achieved him the image of a light-hearted and stylish playboy.
In the late 1960s, his successful films includes Budtameez, Teesri Manzil, Dil Deke Dekho Sachaai, Latt Saheb, Tumse Achha Kaun Hai .He also acted in Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya , Preet Na Jane Reet, College Girl and Prince.
In the 1970s, shammi’s weight problem attested an obstacle for playing the romantic hero role, and the last such film he played in was Andaz in 1971. Then he moved to character roles and acted in films like:
