What are anabolic steroids? Can they be used during fitness training?

1 Answer

The process of burning of food and building muscles or repairing tissues is called metabolism. Metabolism is further divided into two categories – Anabolism and Catabolism, where anabolism is a constructive process and catabolism is a destructive one.

The enzymes which can help in increasing the time to repair muscles are called anabolic steroids. These steroids are naturally produced by our body. Doctors use these steroids in their practice and prescribe them to patients which have lost their capability of repairing muscles.

In our day to day life, while performing various activities; we cause wear and tear to the muscles. Once the muscle is worn out it is repaired with the help of protein synthesis. The muscle after repair gets more strength and shows an increase in size. It is also noted that the performance levels of the muscles increase as well.

Anabolic steroids are used by some people who are in the fitness industry and want faster results. When individual trains on a particular muscle, it takes around 48 hours for the same muscle to get repaired.

However, with the use of anabolic steroids; the muscle repairs are completed in half the time. This helps the individual to train twice on the same muscle which results in increased performances.

The point is that although the above seems to be a really nice way to train and seems absolutely fine, however anabolic steroids are not safe for the body. As these steroids are naturally produced by the body, there is a cycle which is maintained as per which the release and suppression of excessive amounts are controlled.

When the same enzyme is taken externally, the cycle is broken and the enzyme levels increase in the body. This further leads to multiple organ failures and death in many cases. Anabolic steroids are ban in almost all the countries and can only be prescribed to a patient as medicine by a doctor.
