The Indian judiciary system has seen the "darkest hour" of its history, what made the senior judges of Supreme Court hold a press conference against the CJI?

The recent incident of the senior-most judges of the Supreme Court holding a press conference raises many issues on the internal functioning of the judiciary system. In India, this highest institution is respected for its judgment.

People after getting disappointment from every other court seek some relief from the Supreme Court but if such conferences and media drama take place, the faith of people in the very justice system shatters.

It is termed as the darkest hour because, in the last 70 years, the court has managed to maintain its image in front of the country and its people. It is mentioned in the Restatement of the values of judicial life, no judge of the court can speak in public or give any form of information to the media regarding the internal functioning of the court.

This whole incident shows a few thing which needs to be addressed as early as possible. The dissatisfaction of the judges against the CJI and his failure to restrict the issues within the boundary of the court made the judges come out and put forward their views in the media.

The press conference is the symbol of lack of transparency and accountability in the court proceedings. There are trust issues with the leader and his coordinators; otherwise, it could have been solved by the members of the court. Calling the politicians had worsened the situation because; their involvement aggrandized the situation rather than controlling the aggression.

There were issues with every party. The judges, the CJI, the media and the politicians. The media could have used some ethical sense and must not have jumped into the arena as a competition to cover the innermost news.

The politicians should have forgotten their political benefits for a while and could have maintained the dignity of the institution. The other retired judges, who know the court inside out, could have shown some responsibility to not become a part of the game. They also made themselves involved in the whole process and became the part of the blame game.

In all, it was more like a public drama than actually vandalizing their anger. They could have rather maintained a code of conduct. Supreme Court is an institution which is responsible to maintain the democracy. If such an institution comes out as empty and hollow then in no time the basis of democracy will destroy.
